Martha Rosler

14 December 2022 – 26 February 2023

MARTHA ROSLER is part of the generation of radical American artists who expanded the scope of critical art from a specific focus (such as feminism, represented in the MARe exhibition with her most famous photomontage series, Body Beautiful, c. 1966–1972) to a wide range of societal tensions, flaws, and sensitive issues.

MARTIN CREED: THINKING / NOT THINKING

12 February – 2 May 2019

Martin Creed is excessive and entropic, impossible to confine to a single formula. His œuvre is made up of “works,” as each piece is titled, whether it is a painting, a video, an installation, or a performance—regardless of whether it measures 5 centimeters, 5 minutes, or 5 tons.

MARe: an unforgettable experience

Your opinion

”Beautiful modern building with a great exhibition of Pablo Picasso's 46 incredible paintings. ❤️ This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of his death. The mix of Picasso's works with several Romanian artists is also interesting to admire. On the ground floor there is a cafe and souvenir shop. The exhibition is worth visiting! ✅”

Alina Martha Mureșan Visitor

”From a 1930s villa, typical of Bucharest’s fabric, the architect Youssef Tohme took over, not only the architectural function but the symbolic and urban function as well. Erected on a glazed base, and thus open to the public, the reproduced house simultaneously becomes a museum piece and a shout to the city, to confrontation, to culture.”

ArchDaily Architecture blog

”If you want to meet Romanian contemporary art, you would find it here. Very cozy, compact and hospitality place in minimal style. Perhaps here you will understand New Romanian generation.”

Iulia Opaleva Visitor

”I'm a bit cautious when it comes to modern art, but then again, I'm no expert in art and you don't need to be one to enjoy it. The building itself is quite unique, modern but with a taste of old. It definitely stands out in what is one of the most expensive and beautiful neighbourhoods in Bucharest. There were some pieces that did not resonate with me, but most of them are great and they do stir up some thoughts in you. Tickets are somewhat cheap and it's definitely worth visiting. They have a gift and a coffee shop as well.”

Dan Mihai Visitor

”Quite small in comparison with other museums that I went to but nonetheless I had a great experience. The staff is great and are willing to answer anything that you might ask about the exhibition, the art is something new and different suitable for most people in my opinion”

Michael Amber Visitor

FAQ

Got questions? Drop us a line!

Ask a question

What are the museum's opening hours?

MARe is open every day from 11:00 to 19:00, except on Tuesdays when it is closed.

Can I bring a backpack?

Yes, we have lockers in the basement.

Can I bring my pet into the museum?

Unfortunately, no. But you can enjoy a coffee at Beans & Dots in the museum garden, accompanied by your furry friends. 🙂

What does MARe mean?

MARe (/ˈma.re/, with the stress on the first syllable, “MA-re”) is the short name we use when referring to the Museum of Recent Art. We simply say “mare”—as in the Romanian wish “Să crești mare!” (“May you grow big”). A wish we gladly make for ourselves, especially since October 2025 marked seven years since MARe opened its doors.

If I have a ticket, can I meet the artist?

It’s not impossible.
Artists sometimes come to the opening, and other times as simple visitors, incognito.

Picasso exhibition is still in the museum?

The exhibition “The Picasso Effect” was presented at MARe/Museum of Recent Art from September 27, 2023, to January 22, 2024. For enthusiasts, the MARe shop still offers Picasso posters, catalogs, and tote bags. The exhibition was organized in partnership with Musée National Picasso-Paris and marked 50 years since the passing of Pablo Picasso. It featured 46 works by Picasso alongside 50 works by Romanian artists inspired by his legacy.
