MARe Talks: Conversations in the present about contemporary art

Edition #4: How did Ștefan Bertalan change the rules of the game in Romanian art?

What does it mean to be an artist who shapes not just images, but entire generations? In the context of the retrospective exhibition “In tune with the World,” we explore the universe of Ștefan Bertalan—a legendary figure who transformed pedagogy and artistic experimentation with his own vision. This edition of MARe TALKS offers a relaxed yet nuanced look at the impact Bertalan had in Romania and abroad. Our guests are Iosif Király (an artist who trained in Timișoara during the period when Bertalan was active and teaching there) and art historian Ruxandra Demetrescu, in a dialogue moderated by Ioana Iuna Șerban, MARe curator. We will discuss the experimental context of those years and how Bertalan’s revolutionary ideas continue to resonate and influence artists today.
