Erwin Kessler, art historian and curator, PhD in philosophy and art critic, was the president of the MARe Foundation between 2015 and March 2024 and the director of MARe/Museum of Recent Art from 2018 until March 2024. Erwin Kessler introduced the concept of “recent art,” applied to Romanian art after 1965, reflected in the permanent collection Stylistic Diversity with Limited Liability (2018–2023), as well as in thematic temporary exhibitions, in which hundreds of contemporary Romanian artists were presented.
His vision of recent Romanian art was reflected in the museum’s programs, from educational ones (MARe de Mic) to curatorial initiatives (Fabrica de Sens, Curator-Entrepreneur), as well as collaborations with national and international institutions, alongside which congresses and scientific events were organized at MARe and abroad. Under his directorship, MARe launched an international exhibition program, bringing to Romania works by prominent artists such as Jeff Wall, VALIE EXPORT, Gregor Schneider, Tino Sehgal, Martha Rosler, Martin Creed, or Thomas Ruff. One of the most ambitious curatorial projects carried out during this period by MARe was the exhibition The Picasso Effect (2023–2024), curated by Erwin Kessler together with Joanne Snrech and organized in partnership with Musée National Picasso Paris.
As of March 2024, Erwin Kessler’s mandate as director of MARe/Museum of Recent Art has ended, and the museum’s curatorial program after this date represents a new vision.
